Compensation: Equity only at the current pre-seed stage About Bactrix Bactrix is a UK-based biotech and AI startup building an intelligent platform for antimicrobial resistance and drug repurposing.

Our platform combines agentic AI, scientific retrieval, biomedical data, machine learning, verification pipelines and evidence-backed reporting to help identify and evaluate potential therapeutic opportunities.

We are looking for a strong Founding Software Engineer who can take meaningful technical ownership and help us move from an early-stage platform toward a scalable product.

This is currently an equity-only role.

There is no cash salary at the pre-seed stage. Our intention is to transition key founding-team members into paid positions once sufficient funding is secured.

What You Will Work On You will work directly with the founding team on the core Bactrix platform.

Responsibilities include:

* Designing and building multi-agent AI architectures

* Developing agent orchestration and workflow systems

* Building RAG and scientific retrieval pipelines

* Integrating biomedical and scientific APIs and databases

* Designing backend services and APIs using Python/FastAPI

* Building verification, evaluation and evidence-grounding systems

* Improving reliability, observability and error handling

* Designing data pipelines and database architecture

* Deploying and maintaining cloud infrastructure

* Improving application performance and scalability

* Reviewing and improving the existing codebase

* Contributing to architecture and engineering roadmap decisions

* Shipping production-ready features independently

This is not a narrowly defined ticket-based engineering role. You will be expected to understand problems, propose solutions and execute them.

Required Skills * Strong Python

* FastAPI or comparable Python backend frameworks

* LLM application development

* Agentic AI systems

* LangGraph, LangChain or comparable orchestration frameworks

* RAG architectures

* Embeddings and vector databases

* API integrations

* SQL and databases

* Git and GitHub

* Cloud deployment

* Debugging complex systems

* Software architecture

* Experience building real products beyond prototypes

Strong Advantage Experience with any of the following is highly valuable:

* Scientific or biomedical AI

* Drug discovery or drug repurposing

* Bioinformatics

* Knowledge graphs

* RDKit

* QSAR / machine learning

* Scientific literature retrieval

* LLM evaluation and verification frameworks

* Multi-agent architectures

* Production AI infrastructure

* Early-stage startups

Biomedical experience is helpful but not mandatory if your software engineering and AI skills are exceptional.

Who This Role Is Not For This role is unlikely to be suitable if:

* You are primarily looking for immediate salary

* You only have tutorial-level RAG, LangChain or AI experience

* You need extensive supervision to deliver features

* You cannot reliably commit the agreed weekly hours

* You are looking only for a short-term résumé project

* Your current employer prohibits outside professional activity

* You are uncomfortable working with an evolving early-stage codebase
