Senior Backend Engineer (Cybersecurity)

We're looking for an experienced Senior Backend Engineer with a strong background in secure software development to join an innovative technology project. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on designing, developing and securing backend services within a highly regulated environment.

You'll work closely with senior engineering leadership, technical stakeholders and client IT teams to deliver scalable, secure backend solutions while ensuring industry best practices for security and compliance.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable backend applications and APIs.
• Build secure, high-quality software using modern engineering practices.
• Implement security controls including authentication, authorisation, encryption and role-based access control (RBAC).
• Design and implement audit logging, data masking and data minimisation strategies.
• Perform security assessments and remediate vulnerabilities identified through static and dynamic application security testing (SAST/DAST) and dependency scanning.
• Develop and maintain RESTful APIs and backend integrations.
• Work closely with architects, technical leads and client stakeholders to deliver secure, reliable solutions.
• Contribute to system design, technical documentation and code reviews.
• Support cloud-native deployments and backend infrastructure where required.

Required Experience

• 5+ years' commercial experience as a Backend Software Engineer.
• Strong experience developing backend applications using TypeScript/Node.js and/or Python .
• Proven hands-on experience implementing secure software development practices.
• Strong understanding of:
• Authentication & Authorisation
• Encryption
• Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)
• Audit Logging
• Secure API design
• Data masking and data minimisation
• Experience using security tooling including:
• SAST
• DAST
• Dependency and vulnerability scanning
• Experience investigating and remediating security findings.
• Strong knowledge of REST APIs.
• Experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience working with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Nice to Have

Experience in any of the following would be advantageous:

• Healthcare interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7, DICOM)
• Enterprise systems integration
• Google Cloud services including Firebase, Cloud Functions, Cloud Storage and BigQuery
• Healthcare or other highly regulated industries
• Interface engines such as Mirth, Rhapsody, Iguana, Qvera or similar integration platforms

Highly Desirable

• Experience working within regulated or compliance-driven environments.
• Familiarity with standards such as:
• SOC 2
• ISO 27001
• HIPAA or similar healthcare data protection regulations
• Secure Software Development Lifecycle (SSDLC)
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate directly with senior engineers, client technical teams and business stakeholders.
